What is Microsuction Ear Wax Removal?

The microsuction removal treatment is a far more gentle procedure than other types of ear wax removal and you can come back far more regularly for treatment. Suitable for patients who are about to fly, are already hearing aid users, have previous ear drum damage or have impacted ear wax.

Microsuction appointments are 30 minutes and include a free hearing health check. The charge for Microsuction Ear Wax Removal is £60.

We recommend that patients place a couple of drops of olive oil or almond oil in their ears, only at night up to 3 days maximum, before their appointment.

Why would I need Microsuction?

Ear wax usually passes out of the ears harmlessy but sometimes too much can build up and cause blockages in the ear which can start to affect your hearing.

Ear wax that has hardened in the ear canal can become itchy and uncomfortable, in some of the worst cases ear wax can become painful and cause damage to your ear drums.

Solid ear wax can get stuck in the canal and become impacted. When this happens it is essential that the impacted wax to removed.

What causes ear wax buildup?

Earwax or cerumen is a natural secretion and its purpose is to protect the ears by trapping and preventing dust, bacteria and other particles from entering and damaging the ear.

Excess ear wax can happen for many reasons including some health conditions such as swimmer’s ear.

What are the signs of ear wax buildup?

  • Sudden hearing loss – Hearing loss normally occurs over a period of time. If it happens all of a sudden it could be because of earwax blocking the ear canal.
  • Sharp pain from inside the ear.
  • Change in colour – if you earwax starts to turn darker this could be an indicator of infection.
  • You experience tinnitus and can hear a sharp ringing sound – earwax buildup is one of the most common causes of tinnitus.
  • Your ears feel clogged and your hearing is dull – it is important to never use cotton buds to remove ear wax as it can push the earwax deeper into the ear.

What is involved?

Microsuction ear wax removal is a simple solution to remove stubborn ear wax. Our trained experts will assess your ear canal before gently removing any build up of ear wax using a sophisticated microscope.

All of our Hearing Care Assistants and Audiologists are trained to provide Microsuction Ear Wax Removal by accredited training providers such as Tympahealth.

What is involved?

When you attend your appointment your clinician will ask you a few questions to ensure Microsuction is the correct procedure for you and to understand your concerns.

The clinician will then explain how the appointment will progress and once you are happy you have all the information they will proceed with the earwax removal.

The clinician will have a look inside your ears using an otoscope to ensure the wax is soft enough to be removed.

We always ask patients to use a few drops of olive or almond oil in their ears at night 1-2 days before their appointment to prep the ears. 

The clinician will then gently insert the suction tube into your ear to remove the wax.

At the end of your appointment, your clinician will use our highly sophisticated camera technology to show you the inside of your ears and once that has been completed you will be offered a complimentary hearing health check.

The price for Microsuction ear wax removal is £60 and the appointment is 30 minutes.

What Is Earwax?

Earwax is produced by your body and provides the ability to self-clean and protect your ear canal from debris and bacteria. Naturally slightly acidic in pH, earwax lubricates the skin and preserves overall ear health. Your ears should usually produce an average amount of earwax and will normally push it out the ear, meaning there is no need to use cotton buds or at-home methods to remove wax. However, due to some peoples’ ears naturally producing excess ear wax, or conditions such as Swimmers’ Ear, Microsuction Earwax Removal might be needed to clear blockages or excess wax.

Microsuction is the safest, most effective way of cleaning wax build up and any obstruction caused by foreign bodies down the ear canal. The procedure uses a sophisticated microscope which provides a magnified light source enabling the delicate structures of the ear canal to be viewed throughout the whole procedure. Ear Wax removal using Microsuction is performed with the aid of an operating microscope and a finely calibrated suction device, without the introduction of any materials or liquids. Microsuction is a very well tolerated by the majority of people, gives you fast results hence it is much more effective than the traditional wax removal methods. It is also one of the safest methods, as the physician can see the structures inside your ear. It is very rare that people may need wax softening with ear products, commonly olive oil, typically though, most clients manage to have their ears cleared in one session without any wax pre-treatment.

The treatment can be administered as required. Some clients have the treatment a couple of times a year, others less frequently. As the microsuction removal treatment is a far more gentle procedure than other types of ear wax removal, you can come back far more regularly for treatment. There are clients who attend the clinic around three times a year for routine check up’s.

In most cases we can remove the wax without any softening being required to the microsuction treatment. We do recommend that you place two drops of oil (almond or olive oil are suitable) into your ear the night before your appointment. In the instance that we cannot remove all of the wax, we recommend to return within a week for further treatment.

We only recommend microsuction for ear wax removal and offer the service at all of our clinic locations.

The safest form of ear wax removal is Microsuction. This is due to other outdated methods being more invasive, and use chemicals or water being entered into your ears.

If you don't have a wax buildup, our hearing health check will show if there is a potential for a hearing loss, and our team will explore other potential causes for the hearing loss. If needed, you would be recommended to come back for a Full Hearing Assessment.

This answer changes per person - as some people naturally have more ear wax than others. Some people only need it done every year or two, whilst for others they may need it more regularly. Your Hearing Care Assistant will be able to advise further.

We recommend not putting anything into your ears - apart from the odd drop of olive oil to loosen wax. Your ears are naturally self-cleaning so cotton buds and similar items are never needed and can damage your ears.

We do not recommend getting Microsuction done when you have an ongoing ear infection. Instead, we recommend you visit your GP and get the required treatment, then return to us for Microsuction when the infection is completely cleared.
