What is Glue Ear?

Glue ear, is a common condition in children where the middle ear fills with a sticky fluid, leading to hearing loss. This can significantly affect a child’s speech and language development, often without obvious symptoms, hence the term ‘silent syndrome.

Causes of Glue Ear

Glue ear can result from various factors, including frequent ear infections, allergies, colds, and exposure to smoke. It is more common in children due to their narrower and more horizontal eustachian tubes, which makes fluid drainage difficult.

Symptoms to Watch For

Parents should look out for signs such as:

  • Frequently asking for repetition
  • Turning up the volume on electronic devices
  • Difficulty hearing from a distance
  • Speaking loudly
  • Regressions in speech and language

These signs may often be misinterpreted as behavioral issues.

Diagnosis and Treatment Options

If you suspect your child has glue ear, consult a GP who may refer you to an audiologist for a thorough hearing assessment.

Treatment options include:

  • Watchful Waiting: Monitoring the condition over time to see if it resolves on its own.
  • Otovent Therapy: Using a device to open the eustachian tube and drain fluid.
  • Surgery: Inserting grommets to ventilate the middle ear and remove fluid. Adenoid removal may also be considered.
  • Hearing Aids: Temporary use of bone conduction hearing aids or adhesive hearing aids during periods of hearing loss.

Can Children Fly with Glue Ear?

Children with glue ear can usually fly without issues. However, they might experience discomfort due to pressure changes, which can be mitigated with pain relief, decongestants, and special earplugs. Grommets can help equalize ear pressure during flights.
