Turn the background down.
Lower the music or turn off the television when people are chatting. Offer a quieter place for a catch-up.
THE WATTS’ CHRISTMAS GUIDE
A few thoughtful changes can make a gathering easier to enjoy. Start by asking what helps the people you’re celebrating with.

FOR HOSTS, FRIENDS AND FAMILY
Choose the ideas that suit your gathering.
Everyone’s communication needs are different.
Lower the music or turn off the television when people are chatting. Offer a quieter place for a catch-up.
Arrange seats so people can see one another. Good lighting makes facial expressions and lip movements easier to follow.
Take turns to speak. Get someone’s attention before starting, and let them know when the topic changes.
Speak clearly and naturally. If something is missed, rephrase it rather than shouting or exaggerating your words.
Ask each person how they prefer to communicate. Keep mouths visible when speaking and make space for their preferences.
